You Set Down a Meal They Used to Love...

They push it away, turn their head, or just sit there. You don't know if they're not hungry, if something hurts, if the texture is off, or if the plate itself is overwhelming them.

You try something else. Or you don't.

Either way, you go to bed wondering if they ate enough today.

The Real Problem

Mealtime resistance is almost never about the food.

There are plenty of cookbooks that tell you what to feed someone with dementia. Brain-healthy recipes. MIND diet meals. Nutritious options for cognitive support.

None of them answer the question you're actually asking: why won't they eat, and what do I do about it right now?

Resistance is a signal, about sensory overload, fatigue, the environment, about what their body can and cannot manage that day. When you know how to read that signal, you can respond to it. That is what this book teaches.

Calmer Meals Cookbook
What's Inside

More Than Recipes, A Framework

Every dish in this book is organized around the Wheel of Function Framework™, a clinical system for understanding how dementia affects the five domains that shape behavior at the table.

✓ Recipes Built for Real Challenges

Dishes designed around the specific obstacles dementia creates at mealtimes, not generic brain-health meals.

✓ Why Resistance Happens

Clear guidance on what mealtime behavior is signaling, so you can respond instead of guess.

✓ Practical Adaptations

Adjustments for changing swallowing ability, sensory sensitivity, and cognitive load at every stage.

✓ Sensory Guidance

Learn which textures, temperatures, colors, and presentations support eating in each domain.

✓ Adapt When Things Change

Strategies stop working, that's normal. This book teaches you how to pivot when they do.

✓ A Lasting Framework

A system you can apply beyond this cookbook, to every meal going forward.

This Is For You If...

  • Mealtimes have become unpredictable, exhausting, or worrying
  • You're caring for someone with dementia and want more than recipes
  • You want to understand what is happening and why
  • You'd rather respond with confidence than guess

This Is Not For You If...

  • You're looking for a general brain-health cookbook
  • You want a MIND diet or cognitive-support recipe collection
  • You'd prefer a book that tries to be everything to everyone

This book is specific. It was written for the real challenges dementia brings to the table.

Written By Someone Who Has Lived It, Clinically and Personally

Carlyn Lenfestey is a physical therapist with 25 years of clinical experience and 15 years specializing in dementia care.

She developed the Wheel of Function Framework™ to give caregivers a practical system for reading behavior as a signal. Calmer Meals is that framework applied directly to the kitchen.

All four of Carlyn's grandparents had dementia. Her family had no education, support, or reassurance. She started A Better Way to give caregivers what her family didn't have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Caregivers Are Asking

Do I need any clinical background to use this cookbook?
No. It is written for caregivers, not clinicians. The framework is explained in plain language so you can use it from day one.
What if they are already on a modified texture diet?
The book includes adaptations for changing swallowing ability and texture needs. It is designed to be useful at every stage.
Will this work if they are in late-stage dementia?
Yes. The framework accounts for how needs shift across stages, so the strategies are relevant whether you are early in the journey or further along.
Is this just another brain-health cookbook?
No. This book is specifically designed for the challenges dementia creates at mealtimes — sensory overload, resistance, fatigue, environment — not general cognitive nutrition.
